With a value of around 10 billion euros, animal feed is the most important agricultural resource in Germany. The demand for animal feed is around 66 million tons per year, which is roughly eight times the amount of grain consumed for human consumption.

If the production and use of animal feed is not targeted, careful and quality-oriented, considerable economic losses and, in some circumstances, consumer damage and environmental pollution will result. This is to be prevented and at the same time precautionary consumer protection is to be strengthened through official monitoring at all stages of production, processing and distribution of animal feed - in short: animal feed monitoring.
